U.S. Congressman. Born in Warwick, Rhode Island, he moved to New York, stuided medicine and practiced medicine in Trumansburg. He was a member of the New York State Assembly, (1810-12) and the first judge of common pleas for Seneca County, (1812-15). In 1813, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteenth Congresses, serving until 1819. Not a candidate for renomination, he served as the first judge of court of common pleas for Tompkins County New York. Studying theology, he was licensed to preach and ordained a Baptist minister and installed as pastor of the First Baptist Church Rochester, New York, serving (1825-34). In 1836, he was elected Chaplain of the House of Representatives, serving until 1837. He then resumed ministerial duties at Detroit in 1839, was a regent of the University of Michigan (1841-43) and Michigan State superintendent of public instruction, (1843-45). He died at age 79 in Marshall, Michigan.
