Joseph was the son of Isaac and Sarah Montgomery Gifford.

Joseph married Susan/Susanna Butler in Scioto County, Ohio on Dec 18, 1855. They had: Rebecca, Mary I., Benjamin B., Samuel C., George A., Margaret "Maggie" O., Joseph S., and Drusilla Gifford.

After Susanna's death, Joseph married Mary Ann Thompson on Nov. 2, 1876, also in Scioto County. Soon after, the family moved to Indiana and settled on a farm near Windfall. Joseph and Mary were the parents of nine children: Thomas H., of Bluffton, Indiana, Lilly/Lillie, (wife of William Bailey Pendergrass), of Tipton Co., Indiana, Edward/Edmund Monroe, of Nevada, and Bert Gifford, of Sharpsville, Indiana, whom survived their mother; also, Jennie F., (wife of Everet Newman Hershman), James, Willie, and 2 others, also believed to have been deceased prior to Mary's death.

After her husband's death, Mary never remarried, but kept her family together until they all grew to be adults and were married, except Eddie.
