Aged Island Man
Celebrates Birthday


Vitalius Washington Hudgins, 89, oldest male resident on Gwynn's Island was honored by numerous relatives Saturday at a birthday celebration at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Powell.

Mr. Hudgins had observed his birthday Feb. 8, the party assembling to honor the aged citizen the following day. Mr. Hudgins was born at Laban on Garden Creek in 1846. He lived through three wars, the War Between the States, Spanish-American and World War (I). The family moved to Gwynn's Island when Mr. Hudgins was in his teens.

Eight of Mr. Hudgins ten children are living. At one time he lived on the Piankitank but sold the old home 11 years ago on the death of his wife. He now resides with a daughter, Mrs. Belle Mitchum. The family includes 25 grand children and 25 great-grand children. Those attending included Mrs. E. H. Riggs, Norfolk; Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Hudgins and daughters, Doris and Roberta Hudgins; Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Bensten and son, Teddy Earl Bensten; Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Loftland, daughter, Bettye Jean Loftland; June; Mr. and Mrs. H. Powell and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hudgins, daughter, Mrs. Powell's daughters, Misses Audrey and Rachel Respess, Mrs. George Buchannen and sons, Randolph, John Wesley and Robert, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Respess and children, Irene Reese, Lillian, Elizabeth, Alice and Gloria Respess, of Grimstead; Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Powell, daughters Adele and Virginia Powell; Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey L. Powell, son, Wade Harrison, and Mrs. Sunie M. Powell, Gwynn.
