US Congressman, CSA Senator. Elected to represent Alabama's 3rd District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1844 to 1846. Also served as a Member of the Alabama State House of Representatives in 1841, Member of the Alabama State Senate in 1843, Delegate to the Alabama Secession Convention in 1861, and Senator from Alabama in the Confederate Congress from 1862 to 1863.
