AGED RESIDENT PASSES AWAY AT FAMILY HOME
Peter Haring, one of the oldest settlers in this city (Escanaba, Mich) , passed away at his home, 1108 Eighth Ave. South, a 6 o'clock Friday morning. Mr. Haring had been confined to his bed for five months, suffering with the infirmities of old age. He would have been 88 years of age had he lived until September.
Mr. Haring was born in September, 1835, and lived in Beaver Dam, Wis., for many years. His mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Van Houghton (Van Houten) Haring, was born in the house where General Lafayette made his headquarters during the Revolutionary War. In 1847 Mr. Haring's father was killed in a railroad accident and she (Elizabeth) married John B. Demorest (Demarest) at Beaver Dam, Wis. She lived to be 100 years of age. A long life seemed to be the characteristic of the family, Mr. Haring's grandmother having lived to be 92 years old and his grandfather reached the advanced age of 99. His great grandfather was one of the heroes of the Revolutionary War. He was married to Miss Margaret Johnson in 1860 at Beaver Dam, Wis. They came to this city in 1879 when Escanaba was a mere hamlet and have made their home here continuously.
He leaves to mourn him his wife and the following sons and daughters: Charles H. Haring, Milwaukee, Wis.; Miles Haring, city; Ned Haring, city; D. R. Haring, Spokane, Wash.; Emeral C. Haring, Nolden, Wash.; Mrs. William Brown (Flora), city, and Mrs. Heino K. Anderson (Lulu), Kenton, Mich.
Mr. Haring joined the Masonic Order at Beaver Dam, Wisc. in 1860 and later was transferred to the local order. He was a devout member of the First Baptist church and had a large circle of friends in this city.
He entered the employ of the C. & N. W. Railway Co. shortly after his arrival in the city and worked in the round house until 1910 when he was pensioned and retired from active service.
The body was taken to the Allo Funeral Home where it will lie in state until Sunday morning when it will be removed to the family residence where the funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. under the auspices of the Delta Lodge, No. 179, F. & A. M., Rev. H. C. Skinner, officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview cemetery in the family lot.
