LAWRENCE — Donato "Danny" Conte, 99, of Lawrence, passed away Monday, July 25, 2011 at his home.

Mr. Conte was born in Italy, the son of the late Francesco Conte and his wife Arcangele (Martello). He moved to Lawrence in 1916 at the age of 4 and attended the Arlington school. Mr. Conte worked in the carding rooms at the Sutton, Pacific and Ayer Mills. He also worked with his late father Francesco is a cobbler at Frank Conte & Son in Lawrence, and in the maintenance department at Bon Secours Hospital. He also worked for his friend the late Dr. Michael Kannan. Mr. Conte helped manage the Kenwood Hotel with his late wife Mildred.

Mr. Conte enjoyed playing the accordion, harmonica and piano, and listening to music. He took daily walks and maintained the garden. He enjoyed reading The Eagle-Tribune and repairing cars with his brother-in-law. He was a parishioner of the former Holy Rosary Church in Lawrence.

The widow of Mildred Conte, who died in April, he is survived by his children: Frank Conte and his wife Jeanne of North Andover; Angela Turcotte of Lawrence; Joyce, wife of Lewis Gould of Kingston, N.H.; Daniel Conte and his wife Joyce of Methuen; Sharon, wife of Roger Gagne of Lawrence; and Gordon Conte and his wife Deborah of Haverhill; 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Sue and Nellie Conte; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Jeffrey Gould, and great-great-granddaughter, Ava Rose Moran; brothers: Anthony (Tony), Michael (Mike) and Leo; and sisters: Carmela DiMauro and Phyllis Vasta.

ARRANGEMENTS: A funeral service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Farrah Funeral Home, 133 Lawrence St., Lawrence. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Haverhill. Friends may call Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Farrah Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley, 360 Merrimack St., Lawrence, MA 01843; or to the American Diabetes Society, 330 Congress St., Boston, MA 02108.
