U.S. Congressman. Moving to California, in 1849, he attended Hesperian College, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1865 and then commenced to practice in Watsonville, San Francisco and Santa Rosa, California. In addition, he taught in the public schools, (1864-76). In 1895, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth, Fifty-fifth and Fifty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1901. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he continued the practice of law until his death at age 82.
