He spend his youth in Rockland County, NY. He was a member of the Band of Brothers, the 101 Airborne Division, the United States Army and was a paratrooper landing with the allied forces in Normandy, France on June 6, 1944, where he was injured and received a purple heart. He also served in Korea. He married Joan Carew in Brooklyn, New York in Jan 1946 and had seven children.
