Born in Brooklyn, New York, He was one of six children born to Joseph and Mary Carey Largan. His siblings were Michael Crook, Anthony, Lily Mary, Alice and Florence. He spend his youth in Rockland County, NY. He was a member of the Band of Brothers, the 101 Airborne Division, the United States Army and was a paratrooper landing with the allied forces in Normandy, France on June 6, 1944, where he was injured and received a purple heart. He also served in Korea. He married Joan Carew in Brooklyn, New York in Jan 1946 and had seven children.
