James Thomas Botts, Sr., s. of currently unidentified parents, b. Mar. 10, 1845 at Missouri. He d. at Brigham City, UT Jan. 26, 1921, age 74 yrs, 10 mos, 16 dys (Death Cert.)

On Oct. 4, 1874 at Joplin, MO by J.C. Maddy, JP, he m. Mary Ann Stone, dau. of Thomas B.S. Stone and Nancy Ann Murphree, b. in 1867 at Missouri. They had one identified child, son James Thomas Botts, Jr., b. at Missouri Dec. 16, 1875.

Whereas their infant son was residing in June 1880 at Galena, KS in the household of his maternal grandmother, where James Botts and wife Mary Ann Stone were cannot be found.

In the June 1900 census of Cedar, San Miquel County, Colorado, James Thomas Botts, Sr. was enumerated as a single person household, 55 years old, called a widower and a farmer. Then in the April 1910 census he was enumerated at Elgin City, Union County, Oregon as a 62 year old widower operating a lodging house along with two Chinese Americans, proprietors of a restaurant associated with his lodging establishment.

In the January 1920 enumeration of the City of Pocatello, Idaho James was residing as a 74 year old widower with his only known child, son James Thomas Botts, Jr., together with the latter's wife Viola and son Roy.

Shortly after the April 1920 census the James Botts, Jr. family relocated to Brigham City, Utah where James Botts Sr. died having been a resident of that city for only nine months. His death, as reported by his son, states he was a miner and prospector. His form of employment may well describe the father's apparent roving nature.
