Born in New York, NY on August 18, 1930 to Gertrude (Gelien) and Charles Kelm, he was the older brother of Hollywood actor Tab Hunter. Following his parents' divorce, he grew up in California with his mother, brother, and maternal grandparents, Ida (Sonnenfleth) and John Henry Gelien. His mother changed her sons' surnames to her maiden name, Gelien. He was preceded in death by his mother.

While serving in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, he was killed in action in South Vietnam on October 28, 1965. He was survived by his father, a wife, seven children, a brother, and many nieces and nephews. Following his death, his brother continued to look after Walter's family as the center of his own family life.

The short bio states Walter Gelien was preceded in death by his mother, Gertrude Gelien. In fact his mother passed away in 2001, over 35 years later at the age of 92.
