Funeral services will be held for David Collin Dreier, retired U.S. Merchant Marine Captain who had been first mate during an ammunition ship during the invasion of the Philippines in World War II.
Dreier who had lived at 1044 Forest Ave. in Palo Alto for 40 years died Friday at the Palo Alto Veterans Administration Hospital after a long illiness. He was 66.
Dreier was a native of Wisconsin, born July 23, 1901 in Shawano, Wisconsin, a son of Herman and Emma (Winter) Dreier. He attened the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis and graduated in 1925 and served a short time on active duty before taking a civil-service position.
He was recalled by the Navy at the beginning of World War and served a short time before he joined the Merchant Marines. He was a Merchant Marine throughout the campaign in the South Pacific.
After the war, he decided to remain in the Merchant Marines and was a Captain until he retired in 1961.
He was a member of Post No. 375, American Legion, in Palo Alto, Palo Alto Lodge No. 346, F & AM; the Peninsula Retired Officers Club; and the Naval Academy ALumni Association.
Dreier is survived by his wife, Lois; two children, Katherine and Frederick Dreier of Palo ALto and two brothers Caleb of Coulterville and Calvin of Alaska.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Melville Avenue at Fulton, Palo Alto. Inurnment will be made at Alta Mesa Cemetery, Palo Alto. He died on August 11, 1967.
