Father John McVerry was born in Ireland November 9, 1844. He immigrated to the United States in 1866. He was ordained on June 30, 1870. He became the Pastor of the Saint Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church upon the death of Rev. J.A. Weed in March of 1871. Some of the priests who assisted Father McVerry during his pastorate were: Rev. J. A. G. Riley, Rev. Peter Fitzsimmons, Rev. H. J. McKeefry, and Rev. G. T. O'Ferrall. Father John McVerry directed the construction of the current Saint Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church in 1895. Father McVerry passed away March 27, 1930. May he rest in peace.
