"Mr. Marcus Brittain, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of the county, died at his home, three miles south of Morganton, last Friday, after a lingering illness.
Mr. Brittain had reached the ripe age of 81 years, and had always shed an influence for good in his community. He was a member of the Baptist church and lived a consistent christian life. A valued citizen and goos man has crossed over the river.
Deceased leaves a widow and four children and a large connection. He was the father of Mr. R. B. Brittain, of Salisbury, and Messrs. Jeff and Vance Brittain and Mrs. W. E. Walton of this county.
The funeral was held on Saturday, a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends attending. The remains were interred at Bottles church, near deceased's home."
