His mother died when he was just three and he was raised by his step-mother Sarah Holt.
During his 80 years, Charles was a witness at many family births, baptisms and funerals. He outlived most of his relatives.
His own burial service was held at Compton Methodist Church with burial in the Cemetery at Compton Village.
He was married to Lydia Ann Merrill 1831 – 1906 with whom he raised two daughters:
