James Hartwell Cocke, A Virginian, married Elizabeth Norfolk 13 Sept 1825 in Washington, D.C. The Cocke's moved to Galveston Island, Republic of Texas in 1840 from Mobile, Alabama. Major Cocke was collector of Customs for several years in Galveston, Texas. Then he moved his family to his farm in Washington County, near Chappell Hill, Texas. In 1850, Major James H. Cocke was president of the Warren Town (Development) Company, his partners including Richard J. Swearingen, William Keesee and William Hargove of Chappell Hill. Major Cocke was a prominent man about Chappell Hill and a personal confidant and friend of Gen. Sam Houston. Major Cocke died there 14 Sept 1853 and is buried in the Masonic Cemetery.

James and Elizabeth had four (4) children as follows: Mary Cocke first married Thomas Bates, after his death she married Young Gaines Lipscomb; Margaret Virginia Cocke married Josiah Thomas Foster; James Norfolk Cocke married Mattie J. McDade; and Elizabeth "Bettie" Cocke married William Washam.
