The Browning purchased about 2200 acres of land in the James Stevens and Gibson Kuykendall leagues and adjacent land and started construction on the Browning Plantation in 1856-57.
When the Civil War came Daniel Harvie went off to war. He was a Private in CO K 8th Cavalry Regiment known as Terry's Texas Rangers. In November the Regiment went into battle at Knoxville, TN and during the fierce fighting on the 15th of November 1863 Daniel Harvie was killed. His death was a blow from which Colonel William W. Browning never really recovered.
Daniel Harvie Browning is buried at the Atkinson Cemetery, Chappell Hill, Washington Co, Texas. His headstone inscription is:
