Daniel Harvie Browning, the son of William Westcott Browning and Elizabeth Lewis Gilmer Browning, was born 28 Jan 1841 in Oktibbeha Co, Mississippi. The family moved from Oktibbeha County Mississippi shortly after 1850 to Sharon, Mississippi in Madison County. The Brownings stay in Sharon was a short one, for that was the jumping off point for the family in their move to Texas. In about 1852, the Brownings began their move to Texas. There were no trains from Sharon in those days, so the Brownings went by carriage to New Orleans, where they took a boat to Galveston, TX. The H&TC Railroad was under construction so they settled at the end of the road in Waller County, TX, where they lived for the next four years. From there they moved to Hubert place in Chappell Hill, Washington County, TX where they lived for about two years.
The Browning purchased about 2200 acres of land in the James Stevens and Gibson Kuykendall leagues and adjacent land and started construction on the Browning Plantation in 1856-57.
When the Civil War came Daniel Harvie went off to war. He was a Private in CO K 8th Cavalry Regiment known as Terry's Texas Rangers. In November the Regiment went into battle at Knoxville, TN and during the fierce fighting on the 15th of November 1863 Daniel Harvie was killed. His death was a blow from which Colonel William W. Browning never really recovered.
Daniel Harvie Browning is buried at the Atkinson Cemetery, Chappell Hill, Washington Co, Texas. His headstone inscription is:
