A member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Robert was preceeded in death by his parents, James and Lillian West Gunther. Survivors include his children, Alexis and Caleb Gunther; brothers, James E. Gunther and his wife, Patsy; and William A. Gunther and his wife Linda; sister, Betty Southerland; several nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Robert's 20-plus years of Army service included two tours in Vietnam and duty as a drill sergeant. After retiring from the Army, he continued serving his nation as an Army JROTC instructor at East Ridge High School, where he taught the first- and second-year cadets and helped mentor many young Americans to better themselves by doing well in school and attending college or pursuing military service. He also established the JROTC department's award-winning Raiders Military Skills Competition team, and served as its faculty advisor and head coach for nearly six years. He later continued his efforts as a volunteer science instructor at Belvoir Christian Academy, where he established a fund to help further science education there.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at the Heritage Funeral Home and Crematory, Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., with Scooter King officiating. Interment services immediately followed at the Chattanooga National Cemetery, Chattanooga, Tenn.
The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions be made in Robert's name to the science fund he established. Contributions can be made to the Belvoir Christian Academy Science Fund, 800 Belvoir Avenue, East Ridge, TN 37412.
