Michael was born and raised in Evanston. His father died when Michael was 14 years old.
Michael enlisted in the Marines 24 April 1967, at the Chicago Recruiting Office.
"I went through basic training with Mike in Platoon 256, MCRD, San Diego, California in the winter-spring of 1966. Mike and a few others, including me were Catholics and we went to mass together on Sunday during basic training. The drill instructors actually encouraged us to go to church on Sunday. It was good as it was also a chance to get away from the DIs for an hour and get some rest. Michael was a great guy!"
Upon arriving in Vietnam 13 December 1967, Michael was assigned to Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.
Michael died as a result of gunshot wounds to the head and body from rifle fire during a combat patrol, when Golf Company engaged enemy forces on a ridge above QL-9 and 5 kilometers southeast of Khe Sanh Airfield.
Michael was single and served his country for one year and 1 month and was KIA #28360.
He had been in Vietnam for 5 months and 11 days.
Michael was 19 years,1 month and 21 days old.
Survived by his mother, Cecilia Dolores K Anderson, his two sister, Dolores and Frances of 1008 Dewey Ave, Evanston, Illinois and two older
half siblings, Peggy M and Bobby L Anderson of Illinois, his grandparents, Ludwig and Franciska Kurczodyna of Illinois.
