BETTY ANNE BELK, 81, of Denver died Dec. 1. Services were Dec. 4, with burial at Crown Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Belk was born in Peoria, Ill., on Feb. 3, 1918. She married George Belk Sr., 1935.
She was an ordained minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ and helped to establish Christian Church in Peoria, Bethel Temple in Lakewood, Washington Park Chapel in Denver and Christian Assembly, a nondenominational Christian corporation.
Survivors include her husband; sons George Jr. of Georgetown, Gary of Morrison, Roger of California; sister Helen of Peoria; brother John of Philadelphia; 10 grandchildren.

Peoria Illinois would be the spot where Betty Sakash and George W. Belk would meet and eventually marry. The first time her husband saw her was when she was playing the piano at a revival tent meeting. She was a beautiful young woman who also played the organ, guitar, and sang. Later they worked together among the youth at the same church and began dating.
At first she told George that she would never marry a preacher. Her words fell flat to the ground when she later married George and became a Minister of the Gospel herself! I vividly remember in 1980 when I obtained my worker's papers through the minister mentoring program that Brother and Sister Belk conducted through Christian Assembly in Denver. Sister Belk said that she was so excited because I would be the first woman they would mentor in this area. That was meaningful to her since she had been a pioneer for women in ministry.
George and Betty did not have any children the first few years of their marriage. When they did, the first two children became their heartbreak. Donald Wayne died of double pneumonia four months after he was born. Their second son, Gary Lee, was stillborn. However, the Lord restored them through the birth of three more healthy boys that are alive to this day.
Betty was always so prim and proper wherever she went. She loved her children as they grew and welcomed the boy's spouses and many grandchildren.
One of the fondest memories growing up was during water baptismal services at Bethel.
Brother Belk, dressed in all white with his handkerchief ready to shield the nose and mouth of the person being baptized during their immersion in water, would have us testify by making a public confession of our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior in front of the congregation while we stood in the baptismal tank which was housed at the back of the elevated platform.
He would then immerse us under the water in the Name of the Father, The Son, and the Holy Ghost.
As we came up out of the water with a clean, fresh start, Sister Belk played the organ and had the entire congregation join in singing the anthem:
♫Yes, we'll gather at the river,
the beautiful, the beautiful river;
gather with the saints at the river
that flows by the throne of God!♫
Her journey with George, and their two sons that predeceased her, continues now in Heaven where sickness, sorrow, grief, and death are never allowed. She has found her "Peace in the Valley" and waits for the circle of life to be unbroken for all of her family.
