Mildred Evelyn Richards Brackett, 95, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, passed away on Thursday, July 21, 2011, at her temporary residence, Rosewood Village, in Charlottesville.
Mrs. Brackett was born on July 29, 1915, in Harlem, New York, the daughter of the late George Richards and the late Edythe Hopkins Richards of Antigua, West Indies.
Mrs. Brackett was preceded in death by her brothers, Harold Richards and Franklin Richards, both of Harlem, New York.
Mrs. Brackett was educated in private Episcopal schools of New York and attended Hunter College in New York, New York. Throughout her entire career, Mrs. Brackett was employed by the United States Social Security Administration where she accepted a transfer from New York to Baltimore, Maryland, to help open their newly constructed office building in downtown Baltimore.
Mrs. Brackett eventually retired from the United States Social Security Administration on Security Boulevard in Baltimore. It was during this time that Mrs. Brackett met and married Charles A. Brackett. They were married for 50 years, all of which was spent in the Hanlkon Longwood Neighborhood of Baltimore. There were no children born of this union, but they were loving pet parents to French Standard Poodles, "Jacque" and "Pierre", both who have passed on.
Mrs. Brackett had several close and lifelong friendships with members of the Baltimore community, including membership in the NAACP and the Church of the Holy Trinity.
Mrs. Brackett was also a member of a club, Just Us Girls, a Baltimore society.
Mrs. Brackett was widowed in August 2005 at the passing of Charles Brackett and subsequently relocated to Charlottesville, where she spent her final years with family and friends at the Rosewood Village, an assisted living community on 500 Greenbrier Drive.
Mrs. Brackett is survived by a loving extended family which includes her sister-in-law, Olive Brackett of Oakland, California; two nieces , Sharon Brackett of Phoenix, Arizona, and Kim Brackett of Oakland, California; and cousin, William F. Coles Sr. and his wife, Sylvia, of Charlottesville; and special friends and neighbors, Charles Artis, Mrs. Catherin Ricks, Jackie Colkey, and Eleanor Brown, as well as the administration, staff and residents of Rosewood Village.
Special appreciation is extended to her healthcare provider, Dr. Bobby Stokes, and The Gentle Shepherd Hospice of Charlottesville.
Final wishes were entrusted to Hill and Wood Funeral Home, Charlottesville.
A memorial service and final disposition took place alongside her husband at Arbutus Memorial Park, 1101 Sulphur Springs Road, Baltimore, MD, 21227.
