As the writer's spouse is a descendant of the same family, more than ten years was spent unraveling misstatements and juxtapositioned time frames in that pamphlet. This includes the claim, proved erroneous, that Thomas and wife Nancy Ann were separate participants of the 1838-39 forced removal of the Cherokee Indians from Tennessee to Indian Territory (now eastern Oklahoma) on the famous Cherokee Trail of Tears. Further, under provisions of the 1890 pension act, a widow was required to identify all of her then living children age 16 and older, ostensibly to indicate whether she had alternative means of support. Nancy Ann did so by naming her living children by initials and the year of their birth:

William N., age 13, was likely William Nicholas Stone, s. of George W. Stone, Thomas B.S. Stone's deceased brother. Thus, by elimination the younger William R. Stone in the household, age 2, may have been a child of the family but died young. Yet, no child remotely named Maurice b. in 1859 appears in any of the family's censuses. Nonetheless, he was living in 1891 when mentioned by his mother in her pension file. • iii. Amanda Melissa Stone, b. Jan. 1855 (1900 census) and 1855 (mother's pension file) at Missouri, d. Dec. 14, 1923 at San Bernardino County, CA; m. Mar. 7, 1875 at Joplin, MO (by J.C. Maddy, JP), Andrew Jackson "Jack" Boner, b. circa 1849 at TN. He d. July 18, 1936 at San Bernardino County, CA. Six known children of the family.
• iv. Mary Ann Stone, b. in 1857 (mother's pension file) at Missouri, was living in 1894 when she provided an affidavit to her mother's pension application; m. 1) Oct. 4, 1874 at Joplin, MO (by J.C. Maddy, JP), James Thomas Botts, by whom she had one child, James Thomas Botts, Jr. They divorced and by 1894 she m. 2) an unidentified Cullifer. She apparently was still living in May 1920 but further detail is currently unknown.
• v. ?Thomas? Maurice, b. in 1859 (mother's pension file) at Missouri. He purportedly joined the circus and was never heard from again, but was alive in 1891 when included in his mother's pension application. No further detail has been uncovered.
• vi. Nancy Phelps Stone, b. Oct. 12, 1863 at Maryville, MO, d. Mar. 13, 1952 at St. Louis, MO (death cert.); m. Feb 27, 1881 at Joplin, MO (by Rev. J. F. Martin), Adam Cullifer, s. of Wm. R. Cullifer and Martha Owens, b. July 7, 1857 at Harrison Twp, Clay County, Indiana (MO Death Cert.) He d. Nov. 16, 1927 at St. Louis, MO. Two known children of the family.
• vii. Claude L. Stone, b. April 1865 (1900 census) and 1865 (mother's pension file) at Missouri, d. May 9, 1920 at his son's home at Commerce, OK; m. May 13, 1891 at Aurora, MO, Emma Maude McIntyre, dau. of Levi J. McIntyre and Alice Blake. She was b. July 1871 (1900 census) at Wausau, Wisconsin and was living with her 2nd husband in May 1910 at Newton County, MO. Two known children of the family.
[*1] Nancy Ann's pension application first stated, by the Justice of the Peace who wrote the application, that husband Thomas d. Jan. 23, 1878. This was later corrected by affidavit under Nancy's own hand to Jan. 23, 1877, with the pension file summary of all affiants and corresponding dates corrected to reflect a death date of Jan. 23, 1877.
