Thomas "T.J." Nensel, a 22-year-old senior in commerce, died Dec. 25 after a car accident 10 miles from a family Christmas celebration at his grandparents' home in Greenfield, Ill.

Friends and family said Nensel was a dedicated student and active in the University community. A member of the Chi Psi fraternity, he also served on board of directors for the Illini Media Company, parent company of the Daily Illini.

He served as the Chi Psi treasurer for two years and was elected president this year.

Nensel, who grew up in St. Charles, Ill., is survived by one brother, two sisters and a stepsister, all younger. He was close with his father and took many ski trips with him, Mayer said.

He traveled to Belgium last May for an international business class and spent his spring break in Ireland with friends.

Nensel loved sports both on and off the field. He participated in intramural soccer and baseball.

"He followed the St. Louis Cardinals team religiously," Mayer said. "He was also a big supporter of the U of I basketball and football teams."

He also worked for the St. Louis Boys Baseball Club and was a commissioner of the Rookie League.

It was an accident in the eyes of man
But to God it was His plan
There was no time to say goodbye
So put your faith in Christ
To meet again on high.

And I... I took the one less
Traveled by, and that has made
All the difference.
