US Navy Gunner's Mate. James Simms enlisted in 1803 in Maryland. In August 1804 he fought in actions against the pirates of Tripoli. He volunteered to join the crew of the "Intrepid" whose mission was to destroy the pirate floatilla in Tripoli harbor. On September 4, 1804, while carrying out this mission, the "Intrepid" exploded killing Simms and 12 other men aboard.
