Opha Rebecca Gantt Allen, 84, of Newton passed away on July 10, 2011 after a short period of declining health. Born October 5, 1926 in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late James F. Gantt and Ivey Mae Gantt. She was a long time member of New Horizon Ministries in Conover. She was employed for 20 years with Newton Glove and later with Abernethy Laurels. She enjoyed her work and especially spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, J. W. Allen; one brother, Dempsey Gantt of Newton; a half-brother, Jimmy Gantt of Newton; and one sister, Mildred G. Flowers of Charlotte.

Loved ones left to cherish her memory include her son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Tonita Allen of Hildebran; her daughter and son-in-law, Tammy A. and Rick Nelson of Boone; two grandsons, Michael Allen and wife, Heather, of Greensboro and Wesley Nelson and Michelle Keller of Boone; one granddaughter Nicole Nelson and husband, Mike King of Clinton; five great-grandchildren, Auriel Nelson, Alexis Allen, Carter Nelson, Carson King, Marshall King; one sister, Ruth Gantt Isenhour of Newton; one half sister, Inez Gantt Overcash of Newton; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held in the Chapel of Drum Funeral Home in Conover on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Ken Frasure officiating. Burial will follow at Eastview Cemetery in Newton.

Prior to the service, the family will receive friends from 2:00 to 2:45 p.m. in the Chapel of Drum
Funeral Home.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful folks at Serenity Family Care Home for the care given to their loved one for the past 2 years, to the staff and caregivers of Conover Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, and to the wonderful caregivers at Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley for the past week.
