Spindler, Ruth A. (Acheson)
Age 82, died on July 9, 2011 in the care of Saline Evangelical Home and Arbor Hospice. Ruth was the daughter of the Reverend S. Irvine and Hazel Acheson, who were missionaries when she was born July 27, 1928. Ruth always delighted in telling people that she was born in Tanta, Egypt! The family returned to the U.S. before she was one, and she lived in a variety of places in Indiana, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, since her father was a Presbyterian minister. She graduated from high school in New Wilmington, PA. She graduated from Monmouth College with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. Ruth was a member of Alpha Xi Delta and formed lifelong friendships in college and in Parma (Cleveland), Ohio, where she lived for 50 years. After college she taught 4th grade for a year and then worked at Western Electric in Chicago, where she met her husband, Donald C. Spindler. They were married in November 1952. She is survived by three children, Bill of Palmyra, VA; Kathy, and Jeff, both of Ann Arbor MI. She is also survived by her brother, Allen M. Acheson, of Kansas City, and sisters and brothers-in-law Margery McIntosh (Middletown, OH), Dicki Spindler and Dave DeBarre (Davenport, IA), and Jim and Mary Spindler (Lincoln, MA). She loved being Aunt Ruth to fifteen accomplished nieces and nephews, who have lived around the world. When Jeff was in elementary school, Ruth first went back to work as a substitute teacher in math and science. She took graduate courses in library science at Kent State University and worked as a public school librarian in Cleveland and as a corporate librarian at Sherwin-Williams, Midland-Ross, and B.F. Goodrich. At work she performed early computer searches and at home she worked wonders with a Commodore 64! She and Don were members of Divinity Lutheran Church, where they sang together in choir and Ruth played handbells. She gave 30 years of volunteer service to Divinity's library. She was a great den mother, Camp Fire Girls leader, and first piano teacher for her children. Ruth was an avid bridge player, crossword puzzle solver, and reader and watcher of mysteries. She and Don enjoyed traveling with friends and Elderhostel, attending concerts and plays, and visiting with family members. In 2006, she moved to Ann Arbor, where she was a resident for more than four years at Huron Woods, enjoying wonderful friendships, laughter, and loving care from the staff. Many thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers and especially to Joseph Nnodim, M.D., and a multitude of medical professionals for their sensitive care. Family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 14 at Muehlig Funeral Chapel in Ann Arbor. A celebration of Ruth's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 15 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Ann Arbor. Ruth will be interred with Don at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery at Rittman, OH.
