Elizabeth (Betty) Alfred was born to Anne T. (Babolik) and William E. Slezak Sr. on August 19, 1935 on a farm northwest of Milligan. She passed away at Bryan LGH East in Lincoln on Oct. 14, 2002, at the age of 67 years, one month and 25 days.

She was one of two children in the family. She attended Milligan Public Schools in which she was actively involved in sports and activities and graduated in 1952. Over the course of her education, her schooling ranged from a "one-room school" to a doctorate in administration, curriculum and instruction at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, which she received in May of 1983.

Her 50 years of experience in education included teaching in the one-room school house, a Junior High Language Arts and Social Studies Teacher, K-12 Physical Education Instructor, Coach of Girls Sports and an Elementary School Principal. She served three terms as a USAID/NEA Teach Corps Teacher and Assistant Team Leader in Sierra Leone, West Africa and Ethiopia.

Having grown up during the depression, books were a great luxury--an item to be treasured. Her dream was to provide reading opportunities for all children and families--most specifically those who have limited or no opportunities to share in the riches of print. In 1990, she developed the "Reading Classic" state competition for student teams. Annually, thousands of children (and families) participate using both school and community libraries. She has been the recipient of local and State Reading/Literacy Awards.

Her past 31 years have been spent at the Nebraska Department of Education. She has served as Director of Basic Title I, National Diffusion Network State Facilitator and as Director of Migrant Education. Her philosophy focused on building the "Village" that will teach a child through active planning with agri-business and schools with total communities. In the last month, she received two special awards which were: The Nebraska School Psychologists Association Service to Children Award, and the United States Department of Education Office of Migrant Education Appreciation Award in recognition of Binational Migrant Education Program Mexico-USA.

Some additional leadership activities/awards were Director of Migrant Education, 31 years of State service, Wayne State College ELS Endorsement program partner; Member of the U.S. Binational (U.S. and Mexico) Committee, Leadership Award from the 24-State Migrant Education CAIR Consortium (Consortium Arrangement for Identification and Recruitment), Chair of the Eastern Nebraska Reading Council's International Committee; Co-Cordinator of State Geography Bee; Active Member and IMC (Interstate Migrant Education Council) and Forum Guest Speaker of Family Literacy; One of four members for the 2001 Teacher of the Year Selection Committee; Founder of the Migrant Educational/ Agribusiness"It Takes a Village" initiative, Recognition from the Mexican American Commission for involvement and support of the Hispanic Community; Committee Member for the 2001 Nebraska's Read Aloud Project, Establishing literacy partnerships, i.e., EXCEL Corporation's Family Learning Center in Schuyler, Nebraska and (IBP Inc.'s) Siouxland Learning Center; Team leader for the CAIR Consortium's Interstate Recruiters Team for Migrant Education, Special recognition from the Mexican Government for the annual Administration of Teachers from Mexico Program; Co-Coordinator of the CAIR Consortium's (31-State) Migrant Education Consortium Identification and services; Member of the Nebraska Department of Education's Title I Task Force on Schoolwide projects; and Member of the Nebraska Department of Education's Title 1 Task Force on Schoolwide projects; and Member of the Nebraska Department of Education's Task Force for Assessment of English Language Learners.

Betty was an outdoor/nature enthusiast, single-engine plane pilot, sports lover, reading fanatic, and an animal lover. Additionally, over the years, she also found time to acquire a real estate license. Her "spare" time was spent working in her yard and continuously helping not only her family, but numerous others. She was always ready to lend a hand in a moment's notice when and wherever needed. She also treasured the company of her two cats--Whitey and Omar.

She leaves to mourn, her mother, Anne of Milligan, daughter and son-in-law, Sheri and Terry Cherney of Wilber; and her special cats, Whitey and Omar.

She also leaves behind one niece and her family Terry A. and Terry L. Brandt of rural Tobias and their children; Jeremy , Jacob and Jessica; one nephew and his family, Billy and Jana Slezak of rural Milligan and their children, Shane, Shawn and Taylor; and sister-in-law Darlene Slezak of Milligan.

Also mourning her death are family consisting of: Aunt Ruth Slezak of Milligan; cousins, Robert and wife Irma of Crete; Norman and Harriet of Standardsville, Virg. Franklin (Butch) and wife Karla of Grand Island, Shirley and husband Emil Steinacher of Geneva, Evelyn and husband Charles (Bud) Krupicka of Geneva, Darlene and husband, Darrell Vodicka of Geneva; Linda and husband Henry Lopez of Wilber, Judy and husband Doug Turek of Phillipsburg, Kan., and Bev and husband, Loren Filipi of Milligan; Jacque Miller; Judi and husband, Jim Baudo, all of Omaha and their families; family members from Minnesota, and special friends and colleagues.

She is preceded in death by her father, Willia Emil Slezak Sr. on June 22, 1999 and brother William F. Slezak on August 14, 2001. She will be immensely missed by not only her family members, but also those whose other lives she touched in so many ways.

Funeral services were conducted from the St. Wencelaus Catholic Church in Milligan, on Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, with Father David Bourek officiating.
