Marine Staff Sgt Cawley was assigned to F Company, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Salt Lake City. Died when he was hit by a coalition Humvee during a firefight with Iraqi soldiers near Nasiriyah. James was a Salt Lake City police detective and Marine reservist who was hailed as a hero to his community and his country. After serving for 12 years in the Marines, he graduated from the Salt Lake Police Academy in 1997. James served as a gang unit detective and on the SWAT team. He was called back to active duty in early 2002. James met and married his wife, Miyuki, when he was serving with the Marines on the Japanese island of Okinawa. The couple has two children, 8 and 6.
