While felling a tree on the “Mobeck Point” yesterday afternoon Carl Carlson, brother of Wm Carlson, the builder, was caught under a falling tree and his life crushed out instantly, like the snuffing out of a candle. Assisted by a 14 year old son, he had nearly sawed thru the tree, a big red elm 16 inches in diameter, when the tree, which stood on a side hill, split to about 20 feet from the base where it snapped off and fell heavily to the ground. When starting to run out of danger Carlson slipped and fell headlong and the tree struck him square lengthways, crushing almost to a pulp one side of his head, the chest, abdomen and nearly all the vital organs. Death was instantaneous. The terrified boy ran for help and in a few minutes a dozen willing hands were sawing out the log and getting the body out and removing it to the Lake and Burns undertaking rooms.

Carlson arrived here from Elghults socken, Smaland, last spring and during the summer worked on the section in R G Smith’s crew. He leaves an almost broken-hearted widow and six children. His quiet, unassuming manner and kindly disposition gained him many friends and as soon as news of the terrible catastrophe spread, universal sympathy was expressed for the bereaved widow and fatherless children.

The funeral takes place tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 with Internment in the local cemetery.
