He was a member of the Nebraska National Guard and mobilized for Federal Service at Omaha on December 23, 1940, serving as a 1st Sergeant in Headquarters Platoon, Headquarters Company 2nd Battalion, 134th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division. He landed at Omaha Beach in Normandy France on July 6, 1944. 1st Sergeant Robert H. Putman was wounded by artillery shrapnel July 17, 1944 in the vicinity of St Lo, France and died of his wounds August 9, 1944.
