GRAY: Coach Charles Edwin "Charlie" Smith, 72, of Jackson Avenue, passed away on Thursday, July 07, 2011, at his residence after a short illness.

Coach Smith was born in Reidsville on October 31, 1938, and had lived in Gray for the past forty years. He was the son of the late Marcus Smith and LaVada Corbitt Smith. Coach Smith was educated in the Clinch County Schools and earned his Bachelors of Science degree from the University of Georgia and a Masters of Science degree from the University of Alabama. He retired from the Jones County Board of Education in 2001. Coach Smith spent thirty-eight years as a coach and an administrator in various Georgia public schools. In 1978, at Peach County High School, his basketball team won the first and only state basketball championship to date in the school's history. Coach Smith was a member of Clinton United Methodist Church.

Coach Smith is survived by his devoted wife of forty-nine years: Lavon Hall Smith; son and daughter-in-law: S. Mark and Lisa Lila Smith; daughter and son-in-law: Stacey Smith and James Lee Williams; and by his grandchildren: Tyler Evan Smith, Wyatt Charles Smith and Dylan Rose Williams.
