Emily Calkins was born in Cohocton, Steuben County, New York, 21 November 1826, to John and Ruth (Crawford) Calkins. She was the oldest child in a family of ten children of who five were living at the time of her death. In 1845 she moved with her parents to Arena, Wisconsin. She married Walter B Culver 2 January 1846 at Helena, Iowa County, Wisconsin. They had ten children, five of whom were living at the time of her death. In the fall of 1871, she moved with her husband and children to Clay County, Iowa. Her husband died in 1874. In 1902, Emily moved to McHenry, North Dakota, to live with her daughter Mary (Culver) Leach. She died at McHenry 5 June 1907. Her daughter Mary and granddaughter Josephine Leach also died; the three deaths were within five days of each other.
