Its path was about three hundred yards wide, and in this space for about a half mile, through the most thickly built portion of the town, the destruction of property was complete, and the injury to persons terrible and heart-rending. (Lexington Weekly Intelligencer, June 8, 1878, p. 1, c. 6 & 7.) [Note: Seventeen people were killed by this tornado and many more seriously injured. The two-story frame residence of Dr. Buchanan was completely destroyed.]
