In 1845, Alexander's family moved from Pennsylvania to Jefferson County, Ohio, and in 1853 moved to Walcott in Scott County, IA. July 19, 1876 Alexander married Elizabeth Eseke.

He served in the Iowa Infantry during the Civil War and fought at the Siege of Vicksburg.

At the time of his death, there were five children; James E. ("Ed"), Lloyd, Allan, Naomi and Verne. For 35 years he was partner in the grain dealing firm of Stockdale & Dietz of Walcott in Scott County, IA.
