Son of Benjamin Isaac Funkhouser (1842-1878) and Sarah Jane Shank (1846-1935). He married Lottie Cleveland Wilholt (1886-1909) in Vigo County, IN on 11 January 1906 and after Lottie's death remarried to Wreathia Fergeson.

Obituary published in Terre Haute Tribune on 2 Jan 1957 page 2:

Jacob R. Funkhouser, 77, of 50 Deming Street and a life-long resident of Fayette township, died at the residence at 4:30 o'clock Wednesday morning. Surviving are the wife, Wreathia; one son Hubert of the U.S. Navy; and six step-daughters. Mrs. Mary Foltz of Clinton; Mrs. Clara Bobbitt of Texas; Mrs. Lillian Leonard of Arizona; Mrs. Isabelle Warren of California, and Mrs. Hazel Fenner and Mrs. Elma Fischer, both of Terre Haute. The body was taken to the Cross Funeral Home where friends may call after 10 o'clock Thursday morning and where services will be held at 10 o'clock Friday morning. Rev. Clyde Rodabaugh will officiate with burial in the Rose Hill cemetery, west of New Goshen.
