John was called John A.by most of the family. He moved fron Isle of Wight with his family in 1911. Once he got settled in, John went to work delivering groceries and saved up enough money to by a used bicycle and then he went to work delivering telegrams for Western Union. As an adult he worked for the City of Norfolk. It was while he was working for them that he had an auto accident and his arm went through the windshield of his truck. The doctors were not able to save his arm and it was amputated just above the elbow. He did not let this stop him, he was able to do anything he wanted in spite of the handicap. He then worked at farming and selling fish. Later he went to work for the Virginia Department of Highways. He worked 5 days a week in the shop and then on the weekends as a Watchman. At the time of his retirement from the Department of Highways he received at certificate and a gift from them for 28 and 1/2 years of straight service. John later went to work at the Lipton Tea Company in Suffolk as a guard.
He loved to work. John worked until he became ill. He also loved people and would help some one whenever he could.
John was marred to Esther on March 25th, 1922. They moved to Suffolk. They had six children, Aileen, John, Rudolph, Dorothy, Lois and Quincy. Lois and Quincy died in infancy. Esther and John had been married for 58 years at the time of his death. John died at home and was buried at Oakland Christian Church Cemetery in Chuckatuck, Virginia. He was 78 years old.
