CSA Congressman, US Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and opened a law practice at New Madrid, Missouri, in 1847. He was a Missouri circuit attorney for several years and a member of the Missouri State House of Representatives. During the Civil War, he served as a Major in the Confederate Army and was a member of the Confederate Congress from 1864 to 65. After the war, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-third, Forty-fourth and Forty-fifth Congresses, serving from 1873 to 1879. After leaving Congress, he resumed the practice of law until his passing.
