Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War as Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st Maine Volunteer Heavy Artillery. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services". From 1869 to 1871 he served as the Assistant United States Attorney General.
