US Senator, Rhode Island Governor. Served in the The United States Marine Corps during World War II, and during the Korean War. Served as a United States Senator from Rhode Island from 1976 until his death in 1999. He was defeated as a Republican in 1972. Also served as a Member of the Rhode Island State House of Representatives from 1957 to 1963, and Governor of Rhode Island from 1963 to 1969.
