NORTH ANDOVER — 1st Lt. Myles Parker Wonson Jr., USMC (Ret), 80, passed away peacefully at his home in North Andover on Monday, July 27, 2009.
Myles was born in Gloucester, on Dec. 11, 1929, the son of Myles Parker and Anne Muriel Wonson. Myles spent much of his early life working as a commercial fisherman in Gloucester, a centuries-old tradition of the Wonson family. He enlisted in the Marine Corps shortly after his seventeenth birthday and graduated basic training from MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina in 1947. He was initially assigned to the Marine detachment aboard the USS Topeka (CL-67) where he participated in several search and seizure operations of illegal shipping in the Far East. He also served with a Marine security force sent to help stabilize the troubled Chinese ports of Tsing Tao and Shanghai during the communist take-over of the country.
Myles proudly served as a Marine infantryman for over 20 years, rising to the rank of first sergeant before accepting a commission as a second lieutenant in 1966. He retired in 1967 and was placed on the permanent disabled list after battling a serious medical condition. His awards include the Good Conduct Medal (with five stars), World War II Victory Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal, China Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal (with one star), Korean Service Medal (with two stars), United Nations Service-Korea Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, and Republic of Korean War Service Medal. He also earned a Combat Action Ribbon and a letter of commendation for his performance in action against enemy forces during the Korean War.
Following his retirement from the Marine Corps, Myles served as co-owner and president of All-Tech Industries in Andover. He would leave the company in 1978 and return to his true passion of commercial fishing, serving as owner and captain of the Gloucester-based fishing vessel Debra W. He retired from commercial fishing in 1994 and spent the remainder of his life enjoying time together with his family and friends.
A devoted husband and loving father, Myles is survived by his brother, Austin; and sister, Elizabeth; sons, Richard and Craig; daughter, Kimberly; grandchildren, Alan, Kristen, Jonathan, Kenneth, and Andrew; and great-grandchildren, Sofie and Ella Rose. His wife of 58 years, Thelma Ruth Wonson, recently passed away on June 18.
ARRANGEMENTS: A private memorial service for Myles will be held on Friday, July 31, 2009 at the Dewhirst & Conte Funeral Home in North Andover. He will be buried with full military honors at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, in early October.
