Information from an article on the memorial for his son, Matthew Clay Smith: "...He crossed the plains with his parents in 1852, his young life shadowed by the loss of his father, who died from cholera on the journey and was buried by the roadside. In later years the grave unknown could not be located. ..."∼Died on the trail ten miles past Burnt River. Traveling with his wife, Mary Green Smith, 2 sons, 1 daughter.
