Gertrude was born at home to Sigrid Irene (Nikander) and Karl Peter Silberg January 6, 1919 in Ironwood, MI. Her parents were Finnish-American educators and community leaders in the Upper-Peninsula region where she grew up and was educated. She received her degree in education from Northern Illinois University. Gertrude loved teaching young children, and shared her enthusiasm for poetry, music, and the visual arts with her students. She was a gifted designer, especially of clothing. She explored a wide variety of media as an artist, and shared these activities with family and friends. She played piano and guitar, and did a bit of composing. She was an avid gardener. Gertrude loved books, angels, flowers, and playing piano duets with her sisters. She loved Lake Superior, the Pacific Ocean, and sea birds.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Olaf Luther Brand Sovde; 2 sisters, Maia Blair and Arlove Logan.
Her family wishes to extend their deep appreciation to all the good people at Millcorft who have provided loving and skillful care as well as friendship for Gertrude during her years as a resident there. The Millcroft staff was caring, steadfast, and supportive during her last days, as was the Odyssey Hospice team.
A memorial service will be held 12 pm on Friday, January 23 at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, where friends may visit one hour prior to services. Interment will follow at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE. Arrangements by DANIELS & HUTCHISON FUNERAL HOME LLC, Middletown, DE.
