US Congresswoman, US Senator. Elected to represent Maine's 2nd District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1940 to 1949. Also served as a United States Senator from Maine from 1949 to 1973, defeated in 1973, as a Republican, and Candidate for the Republican Nomination for President in 1964. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1989.
