NORTON, Va. - Claude Lee Adams, 84, died Monday (May 7, 2007) at his home.
Born to the late John Daniel and Dora Culbertson Adams, he was a lifelong resident of the Norton vicinity of Wise County.
Mr. Adams was a retired coal miner, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He served in Normandy, Northern France, and the Rhineland. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge.
Claude was a Christian of the utmost, and a Bible teacher of wonderful understanding. He served as chaplain of VFW Post 4301 for many years.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Anna P. (Sturgill) Adams; his brothers, Earnest Adams and Villard Adams; and his sisters, Laura Jones, Gladys Flanary, and Marie Stanley.
Survivors include his children (and their spouses) Larry (Andria) Adams and Timothy Adams of Norton, and Violet (Harvey) Burton of Big Stone Gap; his grandchildren Susan Thacker, Amy Thacker, Aaron Adams, Wendy Adams Cooke, and Matthew Adams; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at 6 p.m. today at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.
Services will be held at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Roger Roberts officiating. Family and friends will gather at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home where they will then travel in funeral procession to Powell Valley Memorial Gardens for 11 a.m. graveside committal services.
Norton VFW Post 4301 and Wise DAV Chapter 56 will provide military honors.
Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home of Norton is in charge of arrangements.
