U.S. Congressman. Moving with his parents to Maine, in 1802, he engaged in agricultural pursuits and served as a Captain in the 33rd Regiment, U.S. Infantry, in the War of 1812. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in the courts of Maine. He was a clerk of the Oxford County Courts, (1821-37) and a member of the Maine State House of Representatives, (1837-38). In 1849, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-first Congress, serving until 1851. After his term, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 72.
