Thelma Margarete Adams passed away peacefully at her Island Lake home on November 10, at the age of 91. She had lived in the same home for 64 years.
Mrs. Adams was born Dec. 29, 1917, in Jordan, Montana, to Olin Wickersham and Ella (McKie) Wickersham. She grew up in a log cabin on Woody Creek Ranch with two brothers and two sisters, riding a horse to Liberty School, a one-room log building. She boarded in Jordan in order to attend Garfield County High School, from which she graduated in 1936.
Thelma attended Holy Rosary School of Nursing in Miles City, Montana, graduating as a registered nurse in 1939. She worked as a nurse in Bonner's Ferry, Idaho, Eugene, Oregon, and Tacoma, Washington. In 1941 she answered a newspaper advertisement for a nurse to serve in the small local hospital in the lumber town of Shelton.
At the First Baptist Church she met a young deacon, Harvey Adams, whom she married on January 31, 1942. While he served on the battleship Washington in the Pacific, she did industrial nursing for the United States government in Seattle. After World War II they made their home on Island Lake, where they raised their three children. He passed away in 2001, just months before their 60th anniversary.
Mrs. Adams worked as a nurse for many years in the old Shelton General Hospital and then in Mason General Hospital. After her retirement in 1977, she read blood pressures at the Senior Center and counseled young women at the Crisis Pregnancy Center.
She was an enthusiastic gardener and a charter member of the Dirt Dobbers Garden Club. She loved to grow dahlias, and she and her husband Harvey were active members of the South Sound Dahlia Society. She enjoyed breeding new varieties of dahlias, even having some of her new varieties listed in the American Dahlia Society's official registry.
The greatest joy for Mrs. Adams was serving her Lord Jesus Christ, whom she received as her Savior at the age of 12. She was very active in the First Baptist Church as a Sunday school teacher, deaconess, nursery worker, youth advisor, Senior Fellowship organizer, and many other ministries. She arranged flowers for church services and weddings for many years.
Thelma Adams is survived by sons Thom Adams (and Dlani) of Shelton and Ed Adams (and Jennie) of Milwaukie, Oregon; daughter, Sally Carpenter of Shelton; sister Mary Alice Phillips of Seattle; eleven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Harvey Adams, brothers Howard Wickersham and Robert Wickersham, sister LaRelle Wickersham Grant, and granddaughter Amy Marie Adams.
