Ann Eliza Ives.
The visible presence of a brave attractive spirit has passed from our sight.
"There should a wreath be woven, To tell the world her worth".
Ann Eliza Ives, the eldest daughter of the late B. Davis and Sally Ann Noxon, was born at Marcellus, March 31, 1814. In her infancy her parents moved to Onondaga Hill and her early education was received at the locally famous academy at Onondaga Valley. Later, after the removal of the family to Syracuse, she went to Poughkeepsie to complete her education. In 1836 she was united in marriage to Mr. John B. Ives. A marked congeniably made this an especially happy union. After a few years residence in this city and in Albany, Mr. Ives' business called him to the Southern States and a large part of their married life was spent in the South. Mr. Ives died of pneumonia during the war, whilst they were living a few miles from Clarksville, Texas. As soon as affairs between the North and South could be settled sufficiently amicably, Mrs. Ives returned to this city, where she has since had her residence. She was a sister of the late James and B. Davis Noxon, and also of Mrs. A. H. Hovey, Mrs. Wells Lake and Mrs. G. F. Comstock. One brother, Mr. Henry Noxon, and one sister, Mrs. Thomas D. Green, survive her. She was a member and loyal supporter of St. James Episcopal church.
Mrs. Ives was a woman of strong mental endowments, enriched by foreign and home travel and reading. She possessed a vivacity of speech and manner that made her very attractive. Being bright and witty and having been prominently identified with the early history of our county, she could always give valuable and interesting reminiscences of the early days. But she perserved to the last a remarkable interest in the people and the events of the present. No one was too young and none too old to interest her and friends of all ages are feeling of her departure a deep sense of personal loss.
The marked traits of her character were remarkable energy, buoyancy of spirit, tender sympathy for the unfortunate and heroic courage. She was unceasingly bestowing benefactions and a large circle of friends will sadly miss her gracious smile and cheerful, hopeful greetings, but must be very grateful that they were able to know and love so brave and beautiful a soul.
