Kate had a fine education as the sole surviving child of Maj. Benjamin A. Botts, President of The City Bank of Houston. Upon the death of Maj. Botts in Sept. 1885, the new bank president discovered that the bank was essentially insolvent, and it was forced to close its doors in December. Since both of her parents were dead and she inherited only their homestead, Kate was forced to take on music students to make a living. She became the third wife of W. Allen Carrington in 1889. He was killed in a buggy accident in 1892, and when their child Kitty was eleven Kate died of appendicitis.
