Matthew Barrow 1784-1855
Matthew Barrow was born April 23, 1784 in Green county, North Carolina, the son James Barrow, and moved to Tennessee from Georgia in the early 1800s.
He had one known siblings; a brother, Wylie Micajah Barrow.
On July 2, 1808, he married Martha Patsy (Childress) Barrow,at Barrow Hill, Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of John Childress and Nancy Anne (Hickman) Childress of Nashville.
They had five children including Nancy E. (Barrow) Pilcher, James Barrow, John Childress Barrow, Matthew Barrow and Martha Louise "Lou" (Barrow) Torbett.
Matthew and his family lived at Barrow Hill, an estate near Nashville. During the Civil War, the house was used as a Federal outlook station and hospital. After the Civil War, the house served as the "Yellow Fever Hospital" until 1878. Later the property was owned by Meritt S. Pilcher and Captain Thomas Stegar families. The house burned in 1920.
It is believed that Matthew Barrow, his wife Martha Patsy "Mattie" (Childress) Barrow, Meritt S. Pilcher and his wife, Nancy (Barrow) Pilcher, were buried at the cemetery located at Barrow Hill, these graves were reinterred at the Mount Olivet Cemetery.
