George made history at this birth. He was the first pioneer child born in Hume Twp, Whiteside Co., IL (History of Hume Township Whiteside County IL, Bent-Wilson. pub. 1877, page 237) He moved with his famliy to Marengo, McHenry Co, IL at the age of 4.

His mother died in Dec 1842. His adventurous father (Leonard L - grave not located) took George, his brothers William and John and their sister Ellen to California by wagon train in 1847. After a year in California they returned on one of the first steamships to sail out of San Fransisco to Panama City. After traveling over land in Panama they steamed out of Chagres, Panama arriving in New York City on 12 Jul 1849. Yes, they went before the Gold Rush and it appears left in the heat of the Gold Rush.

George subsequently returned to Marengo with his family sometime before Mar 1850 where they were innumerated in the US Census. By 1853 the Morse family arrived in Bradford, Chickasaw Co, IA, his home for the rest of his life.

George Morse was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted in Bradford, Chickasaw County, as a Private on 8 Jul 1861 at the age of 23 years. George mustered in Co B 7th Iowa Infantry on 24 Jul 1861. On 19 Sep 1861 he was promoted to Full Corporal. On 22 Mar 1862 he was discharged at Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee for wounds inflicted in the 7 Nov 1861 Battle of Belmont under the command of Gen. U. S. Grant.

On 26 Dec 1863, a year and a half later, George enlisted in Co H 4th Iowa Cavalry. He mustered out with his company on 8 Aug 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia.

He first married Adelia Bird on 12 Jul 1861, just before leaving for service in the Civil War. After her death on 26 Jan 1881 he later married her sister, Esther Bird, on 16 May 1883.

George died at the home of his granddaughter in Chickasaw Twp, Chickasaw Co, IA in 1921 at the age of 83 years.
