Daughter of Dr. H.A. Stokes and Annie Laurie of Guntown. Shirley taught high school mathematics, married Joseph Lester Agnew of Pratts Community, worked for the Park Service in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and raised two boys, Joe and Gene. She was an extraordinary woman, devoted to her husband, caring for her aunt until her death, and later, her father, until his death. She was a great listener and helper, loved words and shoes (her collection of dictionarys and her closet told the tale). You wouldn't want to play cards with her for money....her mathematical mind would take you for all you were worth. And don't even think about using double negatives within her earshot. She loved to cook but hated cleaning. She was a tender-hearted woman.........and very caring, much like her Dad, the good Doctor of Guntown. She was a peacemaker, always striving for unity. She was a better mother than her two boys deserved. She's greatly missed by many.
